Cooking Up Better Estimates. A Playful Approach to Understanding and Improving Estimation Skills

Let me share with you how the Estimation Retrospective Template was created. I was looking for a fun and playful activity to reintroducing estimations. Back in the days, we were stuck with using days for estimation. I wanted to encourage the team to deep dive into the world of relative estimation. Thus, the creative brain kicked in and I started designing the first first frame. I wanted this activity to be interactive and create an experience for the team.

I started with putting down examples from everyday life where we use estimation, that's how the first frame was designed.

It’s all about getting the team to think about situations where they use estimation. I asked the team members to think about everyday situations where we use estimation. Everyone started sharing their thoughts.

P.S: As a facilitator, if you feel only a few participants are responding, use the old round robin technique or tagging to get everyone to speak. To give everyone equal opportunity to share their idea’s. You will be surprised to see the quietest of the lot have some amazing things to share.
