Finding Your Gang of Therapists and the Importance of Connection in Every Age.

We always say kids need other kids to play with, because we can’t keep up with their energy. The little things they play, laugh about, and repeat endlessly somehow never lose their amusement, even at the 100th repetition.

But did you know this need for connection and shared understanding applies just as much to people in their 40s? Every stage of life comes with its own challenges, and we need people who understand us at that particular phase. When you’re young, you have school friends, and later, college friends. But as life progresses, work, family, and kids start taking center stage, and other relationships take a backseat. Before you know it, you may find yourself feeling alone, with no one to truly share or understand the unique challenges of your age.

Being an expat makes this even more difficult — ten times harder, I’d say. When you’re in your home country, even as other relationships fade, you still have the option to stay connected and meet people. But when you leave your entire life behind to move to a different country, continents apart, even something as simple as calling a friend turns into a calculation of time zones. The luxury of reaching out to friends whenever you want is suddenly gone.

In a new place, it becomes incredibly hard to find someone who matches your vibe — a group of friends who can be your support system, your therapy. When I moved to the Netherlands, not only did I lose my therapists (my close…
